Pigs in a Blanket

The biggest football game of the year is fast approaching…and all we can think about are the snacks!

Super Bowl Sunday is right around the corner, but instead of cheering on our team in the big game, we’ll be snacking the night away in our Saints gear, once again! The last few years, the play-offs have left the Black & Gold nation feeling crushed, with missed calls and losses that were just too close for comfort. So, we’ll be sipping Salty Saint’s and stuffing our faces until the bitter end of this one!

Pigs in a Blanket

Pigs in a Blanket are a classic game day hors d'oeuvre. They’re flaky, slightly salty bites that taste the best when they’re fresh and hot. They’re perfect for feeding a low-maintenance crowd and can even be rolled & refrigerated ahead of time. For this party appetizer, you’ll need a package cocktail weenies, store-bought puff pastry, an egg for egg wash and your favorite dipping sauce. If you’re feeling fancy, grab some poppy or sesame seeds for a little sprinkle on top.

Roll out the seams of the puff pastry on a lightly floured space, then with a pizza cutter or knife, cut so that you have 3 strips going one way and 9-10 going the other. You should get anywhere from 27-30 strips. Then get ready to getchya roll on! Roll up each smokie in a strip of puff pastry, pinching closed and placing seam side down on a parchment lined baking sheet. Puff pastry likes to go into the oven as cold as can be, so these will go back in the fridge while the oven preheats to 375°F.

Before they go in the oven, brush with egg wash for a nice glisten and for a little something extra, sprinkle sesame or poppy seeds on top. These will bake for 15-20 minutes, or until they turn your favorite shade of golden. These little piggies are best served warm, so don’t pop them in the oven until the party starts or try to keep them warm until it’s snack time!

These can survive without a sauce, but it’s great to have some dipping options. You can always put out some BBQ sauce, ketchup and mustard, but if you’re a fan of the crockpot smokies & meatballs (another game day classic!), try warming up equal parts BBQ & grape jelly for that tangy sweet sauce. A good grainy mustard works, too!

Are you pulling for the 49ers, chanting for the Chiefs or in it for the commercials this Super Bowl? Either way, you should be snacking! Try out some of our favs, like the Fire Roasted Fiesta Dip, Union Square Cafe’s Rosemary Spiced Nuts, and our Spicy Cilantro Cream Sauce, that tastes good on errything from chips to chicken wings!

Pigs in a Blanket

A classic hors d'oeuvre! These little piggies are great for game day and make the perfect party appetizer.

ingredients:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, store-bought, cold
  • 1 pack Lil Smokies cocktail weenies
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Optional - poppy or sesame seeds (for sprinkling)

instructions:

How to cook Pigs in a Blanket

  1. Roll out cold puff pastry with a flour-dusted rolling pin on a lightly floured workspace, just enough to remove seams.
  2. Cut puff pastry into roughly even strips. You should end up with approximately 27-30 pieces.
  3. Roll up each cocktail weenie in a puff pastry strip, pinching the seam together and placing seam side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  4. Move baking sheet with wrapped smokies to refrigerator while oven preheats to 375°F.
  5. Once preheated, bake for 15-20 minutes.
  6. Eat 'em hot out of the oven!

NOTES:

Make a quick dipping sauce with equal parts BBQ sauce & grape jelly. Pairs perfectly with grainy mustard! It's important that the puff pastry is cold going into the oven. Popping them back into the refrigerator before baking, while the oven preheats, is the perfect amount of time to chill these babies out!
